The Lake House & Squash

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

On Friday night I saw “The Lake House” with Krystal. I loved it! However, there were some parts that could have been a lot more convincing. E.g. The revelation that the letterbox was a time machine didn’t seem to shock them. “Can this be happening?” wasn’t really adequate. I’d be doing a lot more of “Oh my god!” and “Whoa!” Despite this, it was a warm feel-good movie.

During the film Krystal experimented with a new line of beauty product… popcorn. At regular intervals throughout the film she (accidentally) dropped popcorn down her top. Perhaps the butter on the popcorn is a new-age moisturizer… Later in the night she also issued me with the following death threat: “If you put that on the blog I’ll kill you!”  I’m hoping she chooses death by chocolate. Caramel please.

After the movie I was taken home in the Barbie car. Krystal even obeyed the speed limit. What a good law abiding citizen! Unfortunately, we were the victims of a psycho tailgater. A car, with a very high front sat literally a meter behind us. However, as we were on a dark and windy road there was no way we were going to speed up. Krystal, being a person who doesn’t take crap from anyone, flashed her breaks. She hoped that would encourage them to back off. Regrettably, it resulted in them putting their lights into high beam mode and blaring their horn. A complete and utter idiot! There was no where to pullover so Krystal slowed down hoping they might overtake. They chose not to do so. Thus, Krystal, who was now beginning to show some signs of stress, stopped the car altogether. This finally prompted them to overtake us. 10 seconds later a police car drove past! Cops! Never where you need them!

Today I played competition squash for the first time in years. I lost all my games… Whoo! It appears that you actually need to exercise regularly to maintain fitness levels. Of my three games, I initially led two of them by a nice margin… Regrettably, I couldn’t maintain the lead and died sweaty, puffing and red faced… Fantastic imagery don’t you think? The other game… we won’t even go there! It was over before it began. Thankfully, my team-mates fared better than I. (Ewan, our number 1 player, came back and won after he lost the first two games! Whoo!) In fact, we won overall. Whee! However, until I build up my fitness again I think it might be wise if I drop back to number 3 or 4. I could have beaten those guys… :-p Alternatively I could stay in number 2 as a challenge…

Off to watch 24 now! I haven’t been able to watch it at night the last week. My university timetable demands I’m asleep.

Hope you’re all well!

Waking to static…

Monday, July 24th, 2006

I was forcibly awoken this morning by a very loud crackling sound. Despite nearly jumping out of bed from shock, I was very pleased with the result. In the past I’ve had my clock radio set to a radio station. Unfortunately, I’ve always fallen back asleep to the lullaby of the music. Not anymore! This semester I’ve set the dial between radio stations and am pumping out static. There’s no way anyone could possibly sleep through it. I’m a genius!

Today was the first day of semester two. As a result, I’m tired at only 7:30pm. In fact, I plan to be in bed within the hour. I really shouldn’t have let myself slip so far into my night-owl habits. What do I have to look forward to tomorrow? Seven contact hours with a one-hour break! I can’t wait! NOT! Three of those hours are a physical education class. I predict I’m going to be devastatingly tired tomorrow night. On the bright side, Louise is sharing the pain with me! We’re together for all seven hours…

This afternoon Ellen, Louise and I had a good old ninety-minute catch-up chat at Hungry Jacks. Louise bought a burger meal. I bought a 30c ice-cream and then ate my packed lunch. Ellen didn’t feel the slightest bit guilty at sitting at a customer’s only table and just ate her packed lunch. I probably should have done the same… However, at least I was a ‘paying customer’ which makes me feel somewhat less guilty.

I love my dad. Have I mentioned that before? He just came in and gave me some peacan and custard danish. Mmmmm! Thanks dad!

Today someone, or something (an automated bot), has left several comments on my blog advertising an online poker website. If you’re a real person… go away! Your comments will continue to be deleted. If it’s a bot… Well, hopefully it won’t be coming back as I’ve just blocked its IP address! Mwhahaha!

Evil timetable!

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

NO NO NO NO! This semester I have more contact hours and at worse times. I have 9am lectures 4 days a week. On these days I have to wake up at 6:30am as I live so far out from uni! Unfortunately, I also require 9 hours of sleep each night. If I’m sleep deprived more than three days in a row I get sick. This happens without fail. Thus, I have to discipline myself to be in bed at 9pm to be asleep for 9:30pm. I hate living these hours! It feels like my day is really short. More importantly, my TV shows finish at 9:30pm. Damn this timetable!

296 Lygon Street

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

Krystal and I had a city adventure yesterday. The Barbie car picked me up at midday and I navigated us into the city avoiding CityLink. What can I say? We’re cheap! I catch the train into the city everyday. However, this was the first time I’d navigated in by car. Much to my amusement, at one point Krystal grabbed the map and spun it to face the direction we were heading. It’s true! Females do need to spin the map!

After an hour of driving we reached Lygon Street and located the shop number. Unfortunately, a café occupied the position. The shop we were after was nowhere in sight. Thankfully, my university was only a couple of blocks away. I suggested we visit one of the computer labs and double check the company’s website.

Much to Krystal’s horror, the address listed on the website was 296 Lygon Street - the shop we’d just visited. A very frustrated Krystal then decided to ring the contact number. A lady answered only to have Krystal yell “Do you have a shop? Are you above a café? I’ve just been to 296 Lygon Street and you’re not there!” As it turned out street numbers are apparently restarted in each suburb. So there were multiple 296 Lygon Street destinations… even though it was the same road! All we had to do was drive about 5 blocks up the road and we found the other 296 Lygon Street. Talk about confusing! Neither Krystal nor I had ever heard of this system before. City people are so illogical! Bah!

Today I’m trying to get my semester two timetable. Unfortunately, it appears as if the other 36,000 students at my university have the same idea as me. We’ve successfully been able to bring down the university website through overloading their servers. This happened at the start of the year too! You’d think the university could invest in a slightly more robust system! However, with federal government funding at an all time low… Stupid liberal party!

S M R T!

I haven’t written a blog entry in the last few days so this one promises to be large. Amanda came to visit on Monday and I made us a scrump-diddily-umptious lunch. We had fresh sliced baguette with a salad platter, egg mixture, cream cheese and ham. In my opinion, there’s nothing better. It’s so easy to do… Unfortunately, most of the time I can’t be bothered. I guess that explains the rise of fast food empire. However, that’s another issue. Amanda also brought a variety of yummy pastries and buns. Whilst devouring our feast we watched both Miss Congeniality movies. I love the first! It’s a classic and had us both chuckling the whole way through. The second… well, it doesn’t quite live up to the original.

Other highlights of the day included table tennis and of course feeding the birds! Furthermore, I’ve finally got some worthy photos of the King Parrots! Amanda and I took turns with my camera to take photos of the parrots as they’d land on us. In the next few days I hope to put up a page dedicated to bird photos. Amanda was also lucky enough to set her vegetarian eyes on “half masticated cow rolling around in my wide open trap”. Just kidding! That was a Miss Congeniality quote. I masticated the cow with my mouth closed. :-D

On Monday night I revisited the world of Star Craft with Russell. We played a very satisfying two hour game against two other opponents. In the first five minutes Russell’s base was destroyed and he had to retreat and shelter behind my defences. Over time we reversed the trend of simply surviving an assault and began to launch our own. These proved successful and we conquered! In the words of the Energiser cartoon battery, “Never say die!” Our opponents must have been thoroughly frustrated. Hehehe!

On Tuesday I caught up with my old school friends Courtney and Haley. Just to set the record straight I don’t neglect my friends. Despite Courtney having alleged on a previous blog comment that I was ignoring her, I did no such thing. I’d sent her an email days before… she just hadn’t discovered it. Of course Courtney blames Hotmail for the error. However, is this truly where the fault lies? :-p

We grabbed lunch at the golden arches before seeing a movie. However, while we were eating we were approached by a couple of our old high school teachers. It was a school reunion! My favourite teacher, Wendy Tairych, informed me the bi-annual college newsletter had just been released and that I took up most of page 2. I knew they were writing an article on me. However, it appears they had absolutely no intention of sending me a copy. Typical… Thankfully Wendy rectified the situation and put one in the mail. I received it today and woah! I was expecting a little box on page 15. However, I take up most of page 2! The only thing that comes before me is the waffling from the Head Principal. The article is really glowing and makes my head swell. Wendy was right… I do want it for my resume.

Anyway, Courtney and Haley and I had an enjoyable gasbag about the happenings of our lives. We should really do it more often. Afterwards we went to see the movie ‘Stick It’. It had potential… yet failed. The ending was utterly appalling. The creators obviously envisaged viewers gaining a sense of satisfaction at the close of the movie. However, the characters accomplished absolutely nothing in their rebellion. Some threw away their chances at becoming world champions. No amount of emotional music and forced smiles can make that result satisfying!

On Wednesday I accompanied mum to the airport. She’s flown up to Queensland for a week to visit my grandmother. How will dad and I survive? Well, mum took care of that. All we have to do is defrost and heat pre-cooked meals from the freezer. What can go wrong?

Yesterday I awoke to find a new email in my inbox. It was Imogen telling me we were meeting up in 30 minutes… and I was 30 minutes away. Needless to say I was an hour late. Last minute organisation always has its problems! In the end we had a great lunch and I was filled in on the life of an architecture student living independently in Tasmania. Conveniently enough, Imogen discovered she had no money. I must say I found it very appealing to leave her behind to wash dishes for the rest of the day. However, I’m not sure it would have been the wisest course for maintaining the friendship.

Last night saw tears welling in my eyes. C.T.U Los Angeles was infiltrated by terrorists and nerve gas released. The majority of agents died… including Edger! You couldn’t help but have a soft spot for the obese computer geek. Plus, he saved America from a nuclear disaster only two years prior. The few surviving agents are now trapped with a limited air supply… 24 is a truly fantastic show! I love it! But they killed Edger! Noooooooooooooooo!

This morning I’ve earned the right to sing, “I am so smart. S, M, R, T!” I received the rest of my university results for semester one. My results in all subjects were H1s! Whee! I’m such a nerd…

I’m currently in the process of avoiding the kitchen. Against my better judgement I haven’t done the dishes since mum left for Queensland. Unfortunately, the situation is now so dire that we’re running out of bench space! Why we can’t get a dishwasher that works I don’t know… Looks like I’m going to have a fun hour! However, squash is on tonight so there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Hope you’re all well!
